At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
